Young, Rev. Matthew
1750-1800
Celebrated Irish mathematician and writer; born in the
county of Roscommon. He received his education at Trinity College, Dublin,
becoming a fellow in 1775, and in 1786 he became professor of philosophy there.
Later he became Bishop of Clonfert and Kilmacduagh. He died at Whitworth, in
Lancashire, and his body was taken to Dublin and buried in the chapel of
Trinity College. In 1784 he wrote An Inquiry into the Principal Phenomena of
Sounds and Musical Strings.
