Villanis, Luigi Alberto
1863-
Italian musical writer and critic; born at San Mauro,
near Turin. He studied law at the Turin University, graduating in 1887. His
inclination was for music and he began the study of composition under
Thermignon, finishing under Cravero. Three years later he was appointed
professor of musical aesthetics and history at the University, where his
lectures on the philosophy of music became very popular. About the same time he
began to publish articles in the Gazzetta Musicale of Milan and other papers.
Later he wrote many essays and critical studies in L'illustration italienne. He
also published many articles on the aesthetics of music, and for some time has
been preparing an exhaustive work on the development of the several schools of
music, due to the clavichord and piano.
