Verdelot, Philippe
Flemish composer; one of the first to compose
madrigals. Very little is known of his life. He went to Italy and lived in
Florence between 1530 and 1540. Some of his works were printed in France as
early as 1530. He was a singer at St. Mark's, Venice, and Guicciardini claims
he died before 1567. His last publication is dated 1549. His madrigals were
printed in all the principal collections of France, Belgium, Italy and Germany.
Some of his church-music is also found at Toledo, with that of other Flemish
composers. His oldest publication is a book of madrigals for lute, arranged by
Adrian Willaert.
