Herbst, Johann Andreas
1588-1666
Born at Nuremberg, In 1628 was chapelmaster at
Frankfort, where he remained for thirteen years, and then took the same
position at Nuremberg. Returned to Frankfort in 1650, where he held a like
position as long as he Jived. Herbst was a composer of note, a deep student of
theory, and an organist of rare judgment; was author of several books upon
musical subjects; two of these are a tract on Thorough-bass and a Discourse on
Counterpart, Only two of his musical compositions, printed in 1619, are now in
existence.
