Haupt, Karl August

1810-1891

Organ virtuoso; born in Kuhnau, Silesia. Studied with A. W. Bach, Klein and Dehn in Berlin, was organist there in several churches successively, and in 1849 was appointed to the parish church. In 1854he was appointed with Donaldson, Cuseley, and Willis to draw up the specifications for a huge organ at the Crystal Palace, London. He succeeded A. W. Bach, in 1869, as director of the Royal Institute for Church Music, at which he had been for some years teacher of theory and of organ-playing. He received the title of professor, and by virtue of his position, became a member of the musical section of the senate of the Academy. Haupt was remarkable for his fine extempore variations in the style of J. S. Bach.
