Hartvigson, Frits
1841-
Pianist; born at Grenaae, Jutland, Denmark. Received
his first instruction from his mother and later studied under Gade. Gebauer and
Anton Ree at Copenhagen. From 1859 to 1861 he studied with von Billow at
Berlin, where he played with great success. After the death of his father in
the Prusso-Danish war he took up his residence in London in 1864, where he
still lives During this time he spent two years at St. Petersburg, from 1873 to
1875. He was officially appointed pianist to the Princess of Wales (now Queen
Alexandra), and was professor of Music at the Normal College for the Blind at
Norwood. In 1888 he was appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and in
1894 became an honorary member of that institution. The King of Denmark
knighted him in 1895 in the order of the Dannebrog. In 1905 he became professor
at the Royal College of Music.
