Gerlach, Theodor
1861-
German composer; born at Dresden; studied under F.
Wüllner, then in Berlin University. His first important composition was a
cantata, Luther's Lob der Musica. In 1885 he became director of the Theatre at
Spndershausen, and the year following assumed the leadership of the German
Opera at Posen. In 1891 he was appointed Court director at Coburg, a position
offered him chiefly through the interest aroused by his Epic Symphony. Three
years later he became director at Kassel. He has written a number of songs;
chambermusic; and an opera in three acts, Matteo Falcone, of which he was
librettist as well as composer.
